New Higo flexible battery connectors facilitate easy plugging without magnetics
Higo has designed new battery connectors that can move flexibly in different directions to make the connection. These new designs have been developed to meet the growing demand from the market to allow batteries to make difficult mating angles in downtube positioned batteries and to easily connect a cargo bike’s cabinet without using magnetics.
From the bottom to the top
More and more e-bike manufacturers are considering to change the positioning of the battery connector from the bottom to the top of the battery. The reason for this is that the battery connector on the bottom side has a hard life carrying the heavy load of the battery itself. This has a negative effect on the battery connector’s lifetime.
Another disadvantage of a bottomly positioned battery connector is the fact that when the battery is disconnected in an outdoor environment, the connector can easily get flooded with water. This generates corrosion on the contacts and jeopardizes a reliable connection.
This will encourage e-bike manufactures to rethink the positioning of the connector in their design.
The challenge is in the angle
With a battery connector on the top, there are no heavy loads and water floods. The only challenge is the angle. The connector must be able to move flexibly to be able to make the connection with the battery.
Based on this, engineers at Higo worked out two battery connector solutions with a different technology that can both be moved in different directions.
Exploring new technologies
For the development of the 6-pole circular battery connector, the so-called F618, Higo used a technology that combines a PA66 solid material with a softer silicone membrane. This soft membrane allows for flexible movements in all directions.
The 6-pole F621 rectangular connector is based on a different technology. It has an integrated accordion element that is locked with internal hooks and allows for up- and down movements.
No magnetics involved
Both connectors are plug and play connectors. Hence, no magnetics are involved. This avoids connection problems that can arise due to dust, dirt etc. and health issues with people carrying pacemakers. Therefore it enhances the reliability of the connection.
Ideal solution for cargo bike cabinets
Apart from E-bikes, these Higo battery connectors also turn out to be an ideal solution for cargo bike manufacturers. To connect the large and heavy cabinet to the cargo bike, a flexible connector is also a great advantage.
Knowing that cargo bike orders are often tender related, the fact that Higo connectors don’t involve any magnetics, certainly is an extra benefit.
Standard versions and customized solutions
The Higo F618 battery connector is available as a standard version in a male straight and angled connector and a female panel mount connector. A male panel mount version will be available soon. The F621 is available in male and female panel mount. Both connectors can handle up to 30A.
When there is a need for a larger and even more flexible battery connector that can handle higher currents for example, Higo is also able to design a customized solution for any type of E-mobility application.
